Open Letter - Need for a Strong Proposal SFS Framework Law
Euro Coop, together with 285 other organizations, has issued a letter addressed to President von der Leyen, urging her to ensure the unveiling of a robust EU legislative framework for sustainable food systems by September 2023.
The EU is facing significant challenges in terms of food security and sustainability, and it is imperative that immediate action is taken to address these issues. Euro Coop, together with a coalition of 285 organizations, has sent a letter to President von der Leyen, calling for the presentation of a strong EU legislative framework for sustainable food systems by September 2023. The letter has also been cc'd to Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, Commissioners Stella Kyriakides, Janusz Wojciechowski, and Virginijus Sinkevičius.
The proposed framework should set a clear path for the transition to a sustainable EU food system and include all actors in the food supply chain. This will help to anchor the objectives of the F2F strategy into law, making it a key political achievement and an important legacy for the current EU Commission mandate.
The letter highlights the importance of environmental and social sustainability in the policy debate around food, agriculture, and fisheries. The impacts of biodiversity loss and climate change are already being felt and are hampering our ability to produce and access food. Strengthening environmental and social sustainability will increase the resilience and security of our food system, making it more resistant to external shocks.
The proposed framework also has the potential to enable all EU citizens to access more equitable, healthy, and environmentally friendly food. Making healthy and sustainable food the easiest and most affordable choice will help consumers and the food industry to support sustainable producers. This framework is an opportunity to address the shortcomings of the current food system and will benefit EU citizens, the environment, and future generations.
