The European Food Safety Forum: Uniting Key Players to Enhance Food Safety in Europe

The inaugural European Food Safety Forum is set to take place on November 28 and 29, 2023, at La Tricoterie in Brussels. This groundbreaking event will serve as a pivotal gathering for Food Safety System stakeholders in Europe, focusing on sharing knowledge, best practices, and addressing critical food safety challenges.

Europe's food safety landscape is shaped by a multitude of actors, including regulatory bodies, research institutions, industry stakeholders, and consumers. The European Food Safety Forum aims to facilitate dialogue among these actors, fostering collaborations that can improve the efficacy of food safety policies and research efforts across the continent.

One key highlight of this forum will be the presentation of the results from the EU-funded project FoodSafety4EU (FS4EU), namely strategies, roadmaps, and recommendations for enhancing food safety in Europe. These outputs will undergo institutional validation to ensure alignment with EU food safety policies, further promoting harmonization across Horizon 2020 Associated Countries and neighbouring nations.

The European Food Safety Forum will convene annually to share updates on the main Food Safety topics, preferably in conjunction with events hosted by the European Commission or by other EU-funded projects. The first edition will focus on strengthening the foundations for the Forum on the first day, followed by an exploration of the FS4EU platform and cooperation for the future on the second day.

"We are excited to launch the European Food Safety Forum as a vital platform for advancing food safety in Europe," said Veronica Lattanzio from CNR, the project coordinator. "By bringing together experts, decision-makers, and stakeholders, we aim to accelerate progress and foster collaborative solutions that enhance food safety policies and research."

The launch of the Forum, which concludes the FS4EU project, complements the FS4EU digital platform released in June 2023. This online hub is a pool of experts and resources available to help build an interactive, multi-stakeholder dialogue around food safety in Europe and move towards a more sustainable food system.

With already over 200 registrations, the Forum will welcome scientists from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), policy advisors from the European Commission, representatives from consumers protection NGOs, and many other experts involved in the Platform. Parallel interactive sessions will allow attendees to learn about the project’s participatory multi-actor processes. A B2B networking space will allow different Platform stakeholders to share ideas and create connections while a Young session will inspire students, early-career professionals and other enthusiasts about the endless possibilities in the food safety field. The detailed agenda for the forum is available on the FS4EU website.
