Coop Estonia completes acquisition of Prisma Peremarket

Coop Estonia has completed the acquisition of Prisma Peremarket and its 13 stores in Estonia, marking a major milestone for the co-operative retailer and one of the largest retail transactions in the country’s history.

The acquisition, agreed with Finnish retail co-operative SOK earlier this year and approved by the Estonian Competition Authority in May, brings the Prisma stores into Coop Estonia’s nationwide network through a phased transition.

The transition to the Coop brand will take place progressively. The first store, Roo Prisma, will reopen as Roo Coop Maksimarket on 10 September, followed by nine additional stores in Tallinn and Harju County during September and October. The remaining locations in Rapla, Tartu and Narva are expected to transition in November under the management of regional Coop cooperatives.

Strengthening Coop’s presence across Estonia

The acquisition significantly strengthens Coop Estonia’s position, particularly in the capital. Its national market share is expected to increase from around 23% to 28%, while its share in Tallinn will grow from approximately 5% to 17%.

The transaction also brings around 700 Prisma employees into the Coop organisation. Coop Estonia currently operates through 18 local consumer co-operatives and a central co-operative, with around 320 stores across the country.

According to Coop Estonia Chairman Rainer Rohtla, the ambition is to combine the strengths of both retail chains while preserving the elements of Prisma that customers value.

“Our goal is to combine the best aspects of two strong retail chains, preserve everything that Estonians appreciate about Prisma, and thereby take Estonian retail to a whole new level.”

Cooperation between two cooperative retailers

The transaction also opens the door to broader cooperation between Coop Estonia and SOK. The two organisations have agreed to develop collaboration around product selection, with the aim of making Finnish food and other products available through Coop Estonia’s extensive store network in Estonia.

The partnership reflects the shared co-operative roots and values of the two organisations. SOK President and CEO Hannu Krook described Coop Estonia as a strong partner, highlighting the organisations’ common co-operative background and responsible values.

For Coop Estonia, the acquisition represents not only an expansion of its retail footprint but also an opportunity to make its co-operative model more accessible to consumers in Tallinn and across the country.
