Coop Italia Stands by National Producers Amid Freight Blockade, Refusing Foreign Imports
In response to ongoing freight blockades across Italy, Coop Italia has announced that it will not replace missing domestic produce with foreign imports, prioritizing support for Italian agricultural producers over short-term commercial gain.
While transport disruptions have strained supply lines and raised concerns over temporary shortages on store shelves, Coop Italia stands in full solidarity with domestic farmers. In an official statement, the retailer emphasized: “Faced with the current crisis, we express our utmost solidarity with Italian farmers and producers. We commit starting now not to replace missing products with purchases from abroad, asking our member-owners and consumers for a small sacrifice to support our country’s production sectors”.
Albino Russo, First Vice-President of Euro Coop and Director General of ANCC-Coop Italia, highlighted the broader European perspective: “Cooperative retailing is built on long-term responsibility between consumers and producers. By choosing not to turn to foreign substitution, Coop Italia demonstrates that coops put the resilience of our agri-food ecosystem and ethical supply relationships above short-term profit margins.”
By refusing to turn to international spot markets during logistical bottlenecks, Coop Italia protects local growers from market displacement and demonstrates how consumer cooperatives actively safeguard domestic food supply chains during times of crisis.
